How to watch Jellyfin on Apple TV

Short answer
Install a Jellyfin client app on Apple TV and sign in to your server. Pick one that direct-plays the original file (no server transcoding), handles MKV, and accepts plain-http servers on your home network. Those three decide whether your library just plays or turns into buffering and silent tracks.
What a good Jellyfin client does
What we checked
- Direct play means asking the server for the original file, for example
/Videos/{id}/stream?static=true. The server then sends the file untouched instead of transcoding it.Our app - Jellyfin reports a Dolby Atmos track’s codec as plain “eac3”. The Atmos hint is only in the stream’s Profile, Title or DisplayTitle field, so a client has to look there to know it is Atmos. Our app
- Playback progress reports (Sessions/Playing, Progress, Stopped) returned 204 on Jellyfin’s public demo server, and the reported position came back correctly. That is what lets “continue watching” work across devices.Tested
- Plain-http Jellyfin servers need an App Transport Security exception in the app. Our own iOS build blocked plain-http servers until we added one.Tested
- Large libraries need paged requests. Our client failed on a big library until it fetched items 200 at a time. Our app
Checklist before you settle on a client
- Does it direct-play MKV? Most Jellyfin libraries are MKV. If the client cannot open MKV, the server has to transcode, which costs server CPU and often picture quality. See how to play MKV on Apple TV.
- What does it do with DTS and TrueHD? Apple TV cannot output either as a bitstream. The client must decode them in software or the film plays silently. See DTS on Apple TV.
- Does it connect to http servers? Try signing in with your server’s local address before you rely on it.
- Does it sync watched status? Progress reports every ten seconds and on exit is what Jellyfin’s own clients do.
Settings on the Apple TV side
None are Jellyfin-specific. For sound, check audio passthrough settings so Dolby tracks reach your receiver.
Questions people ask
Does Jellyfin have an app for Apple TV?
Jellyfin is a server; on Apple TV you use a client app from the App Store. Several exist, both free and paid. What matters is whether the client direct-plays your files and handles MKV.
Why does Jellyfin transcode on Apple TV?
The server transcodes when the client says it cannot play the original file. A client that remuxes MKV on the Apple TV can direct-play files that would otherwise be transcoded.
Why can't my Apple TV app connect to my Jellyfin server?
If your server uses plain http (common on a home network), the app needs a network security exception for it. Apps without one fail to connect even though the server is fine.
