Apple TV not working: black screen or won't turn on
Based on: Apple's documentation (not yet device-tested by us)tvOS: Apple docs for tvOS 26Checked
Short answer
Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and check the TV is on the right input. Then hold Menu and Volume Down for 5 seconds to make Apple TV cycle through resolutions every 20 seconds. Still black? Connect it straight to the TV (no switch or receiver), turn off Match Content, and unplug the power for 30 seconds.
Work down this list
- Cable: unplug both ends of the HDMI cable and plug them back in firmly. Try another cable: Ultra High Speed for HDMI 2.1, Premium High Speed for HDMI 2.0.
- Input: make sure the TV is on the HDMI port the Apple TV uses. Try other ports, starting with HDMI 1.
- Resolution reset: hold Menu and Volume Down for 5 seconds. Apple TV tries a new resolution every 20 seconds. Choose OK when the picture is right, or Cancel to keep trying.
- Remove the middleman: if the Apple TV goes through an HDMI switch or receiver, connect it directly to the TV to rule them out.
- Match Content: if the screen blanks or flickers when video starts, turn off Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate.
- Power: unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. Try another outlet or cord.

Picture works but looks wrong
Settings, Video and Audio has the full video menu: Format, HDMI Output (YCbCr, RGB High, RGB Low), Chroma (4:2:0 or 4:4:4), Match Content, Check HDMI Connection and Reset Video Settings. Check HDMI Connection tests the cable; Reset Video Settings undoes changes you made.
