Apple TV remote not working: fixes that work

Short answer
Work through Apple's order. Pair the remote again, restart it, then check its signal strength and battery under Settings, Remotes and Devices, Remote. If only the volume buttons fail, change Volume Control (an optical soundbar needs TV via IR). Meanwhile, your iPhone's Control Center remote can run the Apple TV.
1. Pair and restart
Start with resetting the remote: hold TV/Control Center and Volume Down for about 5 seconds, then re-pair with Back and Volume Up if needed.
2. Check signal and battery

On tvOS 18 and later this screen shows a Bluetooth signal strength indicator and the battery level. Weak signal: move within 20 feet and clear the line to the Apple TV. Low battery: charge for 30 minutes with a USB-C or Lightning cable and a wall charger.
3. Volume buttons only

Options are Auto, HDMI, Receiver via IR, TV via IR, Off and Learn New Device. If your soundbar is on an optical cable, choose TV via IR or Receiver via IR; HDMI control cannot work over optical.

Touch or click feels wrong
The first-generation remote has a Touch Surface Tracking speed setting. The silver remote has a Clickpad option, Click and Touch or Click Only, which helps if light touches trigger moves. Both are under Settings, Remotes and Devices.
None of it helped
Restart the Apple TV itself (how to restart or reset Apple TV) and try pairing once more. If the remote still does not respond to a fresh pairing at close range with a charged battery, the remote is likely faulty.

Why does my Apple TV remote work except for volume?
